Our Black Oxide ARP hardware is designed to deliver a distinctive dark finish, but that finish requires maintenance.
Black Oxide is a conversion coating applied to steel rather than a thick paint or plating layer.
A protective oil is used during finishing to help resist corrosion.
Why Is My Black ARP Bolt Oily?
That's normal.
The light oil coating helps protect the Black Oxide finish during storage and use.
Can Black Oxide Hardware Rust?
Yes. Just like any other steel bolt.
Black Oxide is not rust-proof.
Moisture, washing, humidity, road grime, and neglected maintenance can eventually lead to oxidation.
To maintain the appearance of your Black Oxide ARP hardware:
Clean the bolt regularly
Dry the hardware after washing your motorcycle
Avoid allowing moisture and road grime to remain on the surface
Periodically wipe the bolt with a lightly oiled rag. We love Silikroil!
Increase maintenance frequency in wet or humid environments
Regular maintenance is much easier than trying to restore the original finish after oxidation has developed.
