Black oxide ARP hardware is one of the most popular upgrades for Harley-Davidson motorcycles—and for good reason.
It delivers the strength, precision and clean black appearance riders want without the thick dimensional buildup associated with some plated or painted finishes. But black oxide is not a permanent, maintenance-free coating.
It is a performance finish that depends on a light protective layer of oil to help resist moisture and corrosion. Black oxide alone offers basic protection; paired with oil or wax, it resists rust better.
The good news?
Maintaining it is incredibly easy.
A quick wipe with a lightly oiled rag whenever you clean your motorcycle can help keep your ARP hardware looking black, clean and protected for years to come.
Important: Black oxide hardware is not rustproof. Surface discoloration or corrosion caused by exposure, moisture, heat, chemicals or lack of maintenance is not an indication that the fastener itself is defective.
Why We Use ARP Hardware
At Imzz Elite, we do not build ARP bolt kits simply to replace your factory bolts with something that looks better.
Every bolt is selected based on its application, strength, thread engagement, available clearance and overall fitment.
That means an ARP bolt in your kit may occasionally be slightly longer or shorter than the factory bolt you removed.
That is intentional.
In certain applications, we may choose a bolt that provides additional thread engagement. In others, the original manufacturer may have used more bolt length than the application actually requires.
Do not assume a bolt is incorrect simply because it does not measure exactly the same as the factory hardware.
There is a reason behind every bolt and length we select.
Our goal is to build a better, stronger and more purposeful hardware kit.
What Is Black Oxide?
Black oxide is a chemical conversion finish used on steel and other ferrous metals.
Unlike paint, powder coat or conventional plating, black oxide does not create a thick layer on top of the fastener. Instead, the process chemically converts the surface of the metal into a thin, dark oxide layer.
This provides several benefits:
- A clean satin-black appearance
- Minimal dimensional buildup
- Reduced glare and light reflection
- Mild abrasion and corrosion resistance
- The ability to retain protective oil within the surface
- A finish that does not chip or peel like paint
Because the coating is extremely thin, it works especially well for precision fasteners where thread fitment and dimensional accuracy matter.
However, that thin finish is also why black oxide must remain lightly oiled.
Black Oxide Is Not a Permanent Rustproof Coating
This is the most important thing to understand before purchasing black oxide hardware:
Black oxide improves corrosion resistance, but it does not make steel permanently rustproof.
The black oxide surface is microscopically porous. During manufacturing, oil is applied to penetrate and seal those pores. That oil provides much of the finish’s practical protection against moisture and oxidation.
Over time, the protective oil can be reduced or removed by:
- Heat
- Rain and humidity
- Motorcycle washing
- Degreasers and cleaning chemicals
- Pressure washing
- Road salt
- Coastal or salty air
- Repeated handling
- Normal environmental exposure
Once that protective layer has been removed, the hardware becomes more vulnerable to surface oxidation.
Think of black oxide hardware similarly to other exposed motorcycle finishes. Painted, polished, anodized and chrome components all benefit from proper cleaning and care. Black oxide simply requires occasional reapplication of a moisture-displacing lubricant.
Why Are My New Bolts Oily?
The oil on your new ARP bolts is intentional.
It is not leftover manufacturing residue and it does not mean the bolts are dirty or used.
The oil helps seal the black oxide finish and protects the fasteners while they are stored, shipped and installed. Removing all of that oil with a strong degreaser and leaving the bolts completely dry can reduce their protection against corrosion.
You may wipe away excessive oil before installation but we recommend leaving a light protective film on exposed surfaces.
In other words: the oil is part of the finish’s protection.
Why Did My Bolts Turn Brown?
Brown discoloration does not always mean the hardware has developed significant rust.
Black oxide fasteners are initially treated with protective oil. When exposed to engine or exhaust heat, that oil can darken, amber or turn brown.
This heat-related discoloration can sometimes resemble surface rust.
Before assuming the fastener is rusting, allow the motorcycle to cool and wipe the hardware with a clean rag and a small amount of penetrating or moisture-displacing oil.
In many cases, the brown residue will wipe away and reveal the black finish underneath.
Brown discoloration may be caused by:
- Protective oil reacting to heat
- Road film or grime
- Soap or cleaner residue
- Water spots
- Minor surface oxidation
- A combination of heat, moisture and contamination
Regular cleaning and oiling will make it easier to distinguish between residue and actual corrosion.
Will Black Oxide ARP Bolts Rust?
They can. Just like any steel, galvanized, carbon steel and zinc-plated steel can.
Black oxide hardware is made from 8740 chromoly steel and steel can develop surface corrosion when exposed to moisture and oxygen.
The likelihood and speed of corrosion will depend on:
- How often the motorcycle is exposed to rain
- Humidity levels
- Coastal or salty air
- Road salt and winter riding conditions
- Where the motorcycle is stored
- Exposure to engine or exhaust heat
- Cleaning products used on the motorcycle
- Whether the finish has been scratched or marred
- How often the hardware is cleaned and re-oiled
A garage-kept motorcycle in a dry climate may require very little maintenance. A motorcycle ridden near the ocean, stored outdoors or regularly exposed to wet weather may need attention more frequently.
Black oxide is a great performance finish, but it must be cared for according to the conditions in which the motorcycle is ridden and stored.
How to Maintain Black Oxide ARP Hardware
Maintaining your hardware does not require removing the bolts or spending hours detailing your motorcycle.
It can be completed in just a few minutes.
What You Will Need
- A clean microfiber or shop rag
- A moisture-displacing or penetrating oil
- A soft detailing brush or cotton swab for hard-to-reach areas
At Imzz Elite, we commonly use SiliKroil around the shop. WD-40 or a similar moisture-displacing product can also be used for routine exterior care.
Always review the product instructions and keep lubricants away from brake rotors, brake pads, tires, grips and other surfaces where oil could create a safety hazard.
Simple Maintenance Process
1. Let the Motorcycle Cool
Never apply cleaners or oils to hot engine or exhaust components.
Wait until the motorcycle and surrounding hardware are completely cool.
2. Clean the Hardware Gently
Remove dirt, road grime and water spots with a soft rag.
Avoid aggressively scrubbing the hardware with abrasive pads, wire brushes or harsh chemicals. These can damage or wear the finish.
3. Apply Oil to the Rag
Spray a small amount of WD-40, SiliKroil or another appropriate moisture-displacing lubricant onto your rag.
Do not saturate the motorcycle or spray excessively around painted parts, tires or braking components.
4. Wipe the Exposed Bolt Surfaces
Wipe the head and other exposed portions of each black oxide fastener.
A light film is all that is needed. The hardware should not be dripping with oil.
5. Remove the Excess
Use a clean section of the rag to remove excess product while leaving behind a thin protective layer.
That is it.
No complicated procedure. No special tools. No need to remove every bolt from the motorcycle.
Easy Rule: Whenever you wash or detail your motorcycle, give the exposed black oxide hardware a quick wipe with a lightly oiled rag.
How Often Should I Oil My Hardware?
There is no single maintenance schedule that works for every motorcycle.
For most riders, we recommend inspecting and wiping the hardware whenever the bike is cleaned.
You may need to maintain it more frequently if your motorcycle is:
- Ridden in rain
- Washed frequently
- Stored outdoors
- Located near the ocean
- Exposed to high humidity
- Ridden on salted roads
- Frequently exposed to extreme heat
- Cleaned with strong soaps or degreasers
Always reapply protection after the hardware has been soaked, pressure washed, heavily degreased or exposed to salt.
Do not wait until the bolts look bad before maintaining them. Preventive care is faster and easier than removing existing oxidation.
Do Not Wait Until Rust Appears.
Regular maintenance is important because black oxide hardware is much easier to protect than it is to restore.
Do not wait until the bolts begin to turn brown, oxidize or develop visible surface rust before applying oil. Once oxidation has started, the surface may require more cleaning and effort to improve and it may be difficult—or sometimes impossible—to fully restore the original deep black appearance.
A quick preventive wipe with a lightly oiled rag helps preserve the finish before moisture and corrosion have a chance to take hold.
Maintenance should be proactive, not corrective.
Keeping the hardware protected regularly will always produce better results than trying to bring back the finish after corrosion has already developed.
For the best appearance:
- Inspect the hardware whenever you wash or detail your motorcycle.
- Dry the hardware thoroughly after exposure to water.
- Reapply a light protective oil before the surface begins to look dry or discolored.
- Increase maintenance in humid, rainy, coastal or high-heat conditions.
It only takes a few minutes to maintain black oxide hardware. Waiting until corrosion is visible can turn that quick routine into a much more difficult cleanup—and the original finish may not fully return.
What to Do If Surface Rust Appears
Light surface oxidation can often be addressed before it progresses.
For Minor Discoloration or Light Surface Oxidation
- Make sure the motorcycle is cool.
- Apply a small amount of penetrating oil to a soft rag.
- Allow the oil to sit briefly on the affected area.
- Wipe the fastener gently.
- Repeat as needed.
- Finish with a clean, light protective film.
Avoid starting with aggressive abrasives. Scrubbing too hard may remove or permanently alter the black finish.
If corrosion is severe, deeply pitted or affects the wrenching surface, threads or structural integrity of the fastener, the bolt should be inspected and replaced when appropriate.
Never reuse a fastener that appears structurally compromised.
Black Oxide vs. Stainless ARP Hardware
Both finishes can be excellent choices, but they offer different benefits.
Choose Black Oxide When You Want:
- A dark, performance-oriented appearance
- Minimal finish buildup
- High-strength steel hardware
- A finish that complements black engines and components
- Hardware you do not mind maintaining periodically
Consider Stainless When You Want:
- Greater natural resistance to corrosion
- Lower exterior maintenance requirements
- A polished or bright metal appearance
- Hardware for especially wet, humid or coastal conditions
Black oxide should not be purchased with the expectation that it will behave like stainless steel.
The right option depends on your motorcycle, riding environment, appearance preferences and willingness to perform basic maintenance.
Black Oxide ARP Hardware FAQ
The ARP bolts in my kit are longer or shorter than the factory bolts. Will they still work?
Yes, provided you ordered the correct kit for your listed application.
We do not simply duplicate every factory bolt length. Each fastener is selected based on fitment, clearance and appropriate thread engagement.
Some applications benefit from additional usable threads. In other areas, the factory bolt may contain unnecessary excess length.
A difference in length does not automatically mean the bolt is incorrect.
Always verify that you have selected the correct kit and follow the installation instructions and torque specifications for your particular application.
Are black oxide bolts painted?
No.
Black oxide is a chemical conversion of the metal’s surface, not a layer of black paint.
Because it is not paint, it does not create the same thick buildup and will not chip or peel in the same way. However, the finish can still be scratched, marred or worn by tools, improper installation or abrasive cleaning.
Are black oxide ARP bolts rustproof?
No.
Black oxide offers limited corrosion resistance and relies heavily on protective oil. It should not be confused with stainless steel, chrome plating or a permanent weatherproof coating.
Even ARP advises that black oxide is a short-term rust preventative and that frequent oil application increases corrosion resistance.
Is it normal for the bolts to arrive oily?
Yes.
The oil is intentionally applied to help protect the black oxide surface against corrosion.
Wipe away excessive oil as needed, but avoid completely stripping the exposed hardware and leaving it dry.
Is brown coloring always rust?
No.
The oil used to protect black oxide hardware may turn brown or amber when exposed to high temperatures. Dirt, road film, soap residue and water spots can also cause discoloration.
Clean and lightly oil the fastener before determining whether the color is actual corrosion.
Can I remove all the oil with degreaser?
You can remove excessive residue when necessary, but the hardware should not be left completely dry afterward.
If a degreaser or solvent is used, reapply a light protective oil once the component is clean and dry.
Can I use WD-40?
Yes, WD-40 can be used as part of routine exterior maintenance because it helps displace moisture and leave a light protective film.
We commonly use SiliKroil in our shop and prefer it for many applications.
Whichever product you choose, apply it carefully to a rag rather than spraying excessively around the motorcycle.
Do I need to remove the bolts to maintain them?
No.
For routine maintenance, simply wipe the exposed surfaces with a lightly oiled rag.
Bolt removal is generally unnecessary unless the hardware is being serviced, inspected or replaced for another reason.
Will pressure washing affect the finish?
It can.
High-pressure water can force moisture into recessed areas and strip away protective oil. Avoid spraying the hardware at close range.
After pressure washing, dry the motorcycle thoroughly and reapply a protective oil to exposed black oxide surfaces.
Does living near the ocean make a difference?
Yes.
Coastal air contains salt and moisture that can accelerate corrosion. Motorcycles located near the ocean will generally require more frequent cleaning, inspection and oiling than motorcycles kept in dry inland environments.
The same applies to motorcycles ridden on salted winter roads.
What Black Oxide Hardware Ownership Looks Like
Black oxide ARP hardware is not difficult to own or maintain.
It simply requires realistic expectations.
You are purchasing:
- Premium performance fasteners
- Purpose-selected hardware
- A clean black appearance
- Minimal dimensional buildup
- A finish that requires occasional oiling
You are not purchasing:
- A permanently rustproof coating
- A finish that can be repeatedly degreased and left dry
- Stainless steel corrosion resistance
- Hardware that never needs cleaning or inspection
